A colposcopy is a microscopic examination of the cervix. When combined with a cervical biopsy, it is a diagnostic and sometimes a therapeutic tool.

Your position on the examination table is the same as with a PAP smear.
It begins with a painless application of acetic acid (or vinegar) or lugol solution to the cervix. This highlights abnormal areas on the cervix to be biopsied

Usually multiple cervical biopsies are taken. Biopsies are uncomfortable and ‘crampy' but usually not painful.

There is usually some light bleeding associated with biopsy. Application of silver nitrate on the biopsies areas effectively stops the bleeding.

Afterwards, you might expect dark vaginale discharge.

Your doctor will give you her diagnosis but the biopsy result in 2 weeks is confirmatory

Afterwards, it is advised to avoid sexual activity, tampon use or bath 1 week following the colposcopy

To prepare for your colposcopy:

  1. Make sure you don’t have your periods at the time of the test as this affects visualisation
  2. Come dressed in loose comfortable clothing
  3. You may bring along a sanitary pad for use afterwards and during the next 1-2 days

Please call if you have any of the following:

  1. Heavy vaginale bleeding
  2. Fevers
